Coalition of Malaysian NGOs deliver memos to protest atrocities in Gaza (NST – 12th February 2009)

The Coalition of Malaysian NGOs Against Persecution of Palestians (COMPLETE), comprising more than 100 NGOs, today handed over a memorandum to protest atrocities committed against the Palestinians in Gaza to the Egyptian, Turkish and Palestinian Authority embassies here.

Its chairman, Adnan Mohd Tahir, said COMPLETE would also be handing over the memorandum to the Venezuelan, French and United States embassies here.

COMPLETE has also drafted letters to the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) member nations and all foreign missions in Kuala Lumpur, Adnan said.

In the memorandum, COMPLETE urged the international community to condemn Israel’s aggression and exert diplomatic pressure to compel Israel to adhere to the various United Nations resolutions and act within the bounds of international law, Adnan said.

“We request world leaders and eminent persons to seriously consider bringing charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity to the political and military leaders of Israel,” he told Bernama after handing over a memorandum to the Ambassador of the Palestinian Authority Abdelaziz Abu Ghous at Palestinian Authority’s Embassy here, today.
Adnan said COMPLETE also urged the government of Egypt to emulate the Venezuelan government in cutting off diplomatic ties with Israel and hoped that other free nations would follow suit.

He added that COMPLETE lauded the leaders of Venezuela and Turkey for their courageous stand in condemning Israeli aggression against the Palestinians.

“COMPLETE urges the government of Egypt to immediately open the Rafah crossing to allow food items and medicine that have been sent from all over the world to be delivered to the people of Gaza and to allow medical and relief personnel entry into Gaza for humanitarian relief work,” he said.

He said that Turkey’s active participation in the OIC would reinvigorate the organization and rally governments of Muslim nations, in line with the expressed sentiments of their citizens, to take a unified stand in condemning Israel and push for a just resolution of the Palestinian tragedy.

“We believe the above measures will isolate and compel Israel to seriously negotiate to end the tragedy leading to the creation of a free and independent state of Palestine,” he said.

COMPLETE is a coalition that cuts across racial, religious and political lines in Malaysia. This coalition was formed after the recent escalation of Israel-Palestine conflict that cultiminated in the invasion of Gaza.
